How are CNC Machining Prices Calculated? | ARK CNC

One of the most frequently asked questions in machining and subcontract CNC machining projects is how the manufacturing price of a part is determined behind the scenes. The quoting process is not solely dependent on the weight or raw material of the part; it involves detailed engineering and time calculations.

As ARK CNC, we transparently explain the subcontract CNC machining price calculation standards we apply in the B2B quotes we prepare at our facility in Bayrampaşa, Istanbul.

4 Key Parameters Determining CNC Manufacturing Price

When creating a quote for CNC turning or vertical machining (milling), the total cost consists of 4 main components:

1. Raw Material Cost

The calculation is based on the amount of raw material, such as a block or billet, that enters the machine for processing, not the final weight of the part.

  • Material Type: Aluminum 6061, Stainless Steel 316, or PEEK plastic have different per-kilogram prices and machinability.

  • Chip Ratio: The more material is scraped off the billet and turned into chips, the higher the raw material waste rate and cost.

2. Machine Hourly Rate and Machining Time

The total time (Cycle Time) the CNC machine spends processing the part is the largest item in the price.

  • Machine Type: The hourly rate of a standard 3-axis vertical machining center differs from that of C-axis capable or 5-axis CNC machines.

  • Cutting Speeds: For hard materials like steel, the feed rate is low, extending machine time and increasing unit cost.

3. Preparation and Setup Time (Setup & Tooling)

These are the preparation processes performed to get the machine ready to process the part:

  • CAD/CAM programming and toolpath creation.

  • Setting up cutting tools and making custom fixtures.

Important Note: Setup cost is fixed. Therefore, when producing 1 prototype, the unit price is high because the setup cost is borne by a single part; however, in a series production of 1000 units, the setup cost per part becomes negligible.

4. Secondary Operations and Quality Control

Additional processes the part undergoes after leaving the machine are added to the budget:

  • Surface Treatments: Anodizing, blackening, zinc plating, or polishing (mirror finish).

  • Heat Treatment: Carburizing, induction hardening, or vacuum hardening.

  • CMM Measurement Reporting: CoC (Certificate of Conformity) certification provided for parts with critical tolerances (H7, etc.).

Example CNC Subcontract Pricing Formula

With a simple approach, the subcontract part manufacturing price is calculated as follows:

Total Price = Raw Material Cost + (Machine Hourly Rate × Machining Time) + (Setup Cost / Number of Parts) + Surface and Heat Treatments
