How to Reduce CNC Machining Cost? (5 Golden Rules) | ARK CNC

In subtractive manufacturing and outsourced CNC machining projects, the time a part spends on the machine is not the only factor determining the budget. Incorrect material selection, unnecessarily tight tolerances, and erroneous toolpaths can double or triple the unit cost of a single part.

Especially in high-volume serial production or critical prototype manufacturing, it is possible to reduce costs without compromising quality and precision. As ARK CNC, we have compiled 5 technical rules that will optimize your manufacturing budget.

5 Technical Steps to Reduce CNC Manufacturing Cost

1. Tolerance Management: Tight Tolerances Only on Critical Surfaces

Assigning micron-level tolerances to all dimensions in the technical drawing multiplies the machining time and the risk of scrap parts.

Cost Tip: Use tight tolerances (H7, g6, etc.) only on surfaces that interact, such as bearings, shafts, or where rollers pass. Opt for ISO 2768 standard tolerances (±0.1 mm) on free surfaces to reduce machine hour rates.

2. Correct Material Selection and Tool Life

Machining 7075 Aluminum does not have the same cutting parameters as machining 4140 Heat-Treated Steel or Stainless Steel. Hard materials increase tool wear and reduce cutting speed.

  • Consider Alternatives: If the part does not necessarily need to be steel, you can halve the machining time by choosing high-strength aluminum (7075-T6) with hard anodized coating alternatives.

3. Minimize the Number of Setups

Machining a part from 5 different surfaces means disassembling and re-fixturing (setup) each time. Each additional setup increases labor costs and the risk of positional errors.

Cost Tip: Design parts to be completed in one or a maximum of two setups. With our C-axis CNC lathe or multi-axis technology, we can machine complex geometries in a single operation, eliminating setup times.

4. Deep Pockets and Internal Corner Radii

Small radii in internal corners necessitate the use of long and thin end mills, leading to chatter (vibration) and tool breakage.

  • Corner Radius Rule: Keep internal corner radii at least 10%-15% larger than the diameter of the cutting tool used. This allows the tool to move freely around corners without getting stuck and maintains machining speed.

5. DFM (Design for Manufacturability) Analysis

Failure to check manufacturability during the design phase leads to revisions on the part already on the machine, tool breakages, and loss of time. A DFM analysis performed before production directly protects the budget.
