Guide to Cosmetic Packaging Mold Design and Manufacturing | ARK CNC

As ARK CNC, at our facility in Bayrampaşa, Istanbul, we design and manufacture packaging molds for the cosmetics industry using state-of-the-art CNC lathes and vertical machining (milling) centers. These molds are for packaging with the most complex geometries and requiring tight tolerances. Cosmetic packaging not only protects the product but also reflects the brand's identity, creates a distinctive presence on the shelf, and offers an aesthetically pleasing form that evokes a tactile sensation. Preserving this aesthetic in mass production requires flawless mold design and micron-level CNC machining processes.

In this technical guide, we examine the critical mold processes involved in the transition from a conceptual cosmetic packaging design to mass production, categorized into 5 fundamental stages.

5 Critical Stages in Cosmetic Packaging Mold Manufacturing

1. 3D CAD/CAM Design and Engineering

The process begins with an analysis of the manufacturability of the aesthetic packaging design provided by the client. The packaging form is optimized according to draft angles, wall thicknesses, and filling line parameters. 3D data in STEP or IGES formats are converted into precise mold cavities and cores using CAD/CAM software such as SolidWorks and Siemens NX.

2. Material Selection and Heat Treatment Strategy

Cosmetic blow molds and injection molds must maintain their dimensional stability over hundreds of thousands of cycles:

  • Aluminum 7075: Provides fast cycle times, especially in plastic blow molds, due to its high heat transfer and lightness.

  • 1.2344 and 420 Stainless Steel: Preferred for core and cavity parts requiring high wear resistance and a bright surface finish (polishing), with heat treatment applied.

3. Precision CNC Machining (Turning & Milling)

Following design approval, mold parts are machined on CNC lathes and vertical machining centers. 4 and 5-axis milling techniques are used for free-form organic surfaces. C-axis capable CNC lathes are utilized for bottle caps and circular details, offering high precision in a single setup.

4. Quality Control and CMM Inspection (CoC Report)

After machining, all parts are inspected with precise CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) and optical scanning systems. The accuracy of critical tolerances (H7, f7) ensuring cap-body sealing is verified. At ARK CNC, we document the measurement results throughout all our manufacturing processes with a CoC (Certificate of Conformity) report.

5. Mold Assembly, Polishing, and Trial Shot

Upon completion of assembly, special polishing (mirror finish) or satin texture surface treatments are applied to the molds. After a trial shot (T1) is performed and the surface quality and assembly tolerances of the resulting product are approved, the mold is delivered for mass production.
