Aluminum vs. Stainless Steel: Which to Choose in CNC Machining?

Aluminum vs. Stainless Steel: Which to Choose in CNC Machining?

There is no single correct answer to whether aluminum or stainless steel should be chosen in CNC machining; the right choice depends on the part's operating environment, mechanical load requirements, and budget. The general rule of thumb is: choose aluminum if lightness and fast machinability are important, and stainless steel if high strength and corrosion resistance are required.

When Should Aluminum Be Chosen?

Thanks to its low density, aluminum stands out in applications requiring lightweight parts (aerospace, automotive, electronic enclosures, robotic arms). Its material removal rate is high, which reduces machining time and, consequently, cost. It also provides a certain degree of corrosion resistance through its natural oxide layer, though it is not as durable as stainless steel in aggressive chemical environments. The 6061 and 7075 series aluminum alloys are the most frequently preferred types in CNC machining.

When Should Stainless Steel Be Chosen?

Stainless steel is preferred for parts requiring high mechanical strength, wear resistance, and superior protection against corrosion: food and medical equipment, marine environment applications, and fasteners exposed to high pressure. Because it is heavier and harder than aluminum, machining time is longer, tool wear increases, and unit cost rises. The 304 and 316 series stainless steels are the most widely used alloys in the industry; the 316 series is particularly more resistant to chlorine and saltwater environments.

Comparison Table

Criteria Aluminum Stainless Steel
Weight Lightweight Heavy
Machinability Fast, economical Slower, costly
Corrosion Resistance Moderate High
Mechanical Strength Moderate High
Typical Application Aerospace, electronics, automotive Medical, food, marine, industrial
Unit Cost Low-medium Medium-high

Why Does Proper Material Selection Require Engineering Evaluation?

Material selection is not merely a comparison of weight or cost; the loads, temperatures, chemical environments, and tolerances the part will experience must also be taken into account. Incorrect material selection can cause the part to experience premature fatigue, corrosion, or dimensional deviation. At ARK CNC, from the moment we receive your technical drawing, our engineering team evaluates the most suitable material for your use case together and carries out production to a 0.01 mm tolerance standard.

If you are unsure which material is best suited for your part, you can send us your technical drawing to get a free engineering evaluation and quote.
